Wyo Wild Ride Ranch Rodeo and Horse Sale Recap

The Wyo Wild Ride Ranch Rodeo and Horse Sale in Gillette is a marathon weekend in June each year with a smattering of events and entertainment. This year, in addition to the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association sanctioned event, barrel racers and team ropers competed Friday in an open competition, with the top five competing during the ranch rodeo Saturday. Entertainer G.T. Hurley wove his cowboy tunes through the crowd who stayed for the calcutta of teams.
Saturday morning kicked off with women’s steer stopping, then the all-day rodeo wrapped up with 20 ranch saddle bronc riders aboard rank Burch Broncs, followed by a performance by the flittering, dulcet tones of Adrian Buckaroogirl and her trusty guitar. Youngsters got aboard substantial-sized wooly rams in the mutton busting.
The Sunday-morning horse-sale preview started with the beautiful voice and relatable songs of Trinity Seely and a few auction items to benefit local associations. The horses for sale in the event were some of the finest I’ve seen at a horse sale; it’s apparent those who offered up their steeds for sale put in the sweat and hours to make them ideal ranch and family mounts.
I had the honor to photograph the weekend for Tiffany Schwenke, the event producer, and I am excited to share some with you now. The posted photos are all in greyscale; I feel like that makes is easier to feel the raw, dusty day the cowboys felt and the harsh sunshine makes for dramatic, deep black and whites. The fully-edited color photos from the weekend can be viewed on Savanna.Smugmug.com.
