Shipping Day has come and gone for us. It’s my second favorite day of the year! The first being branding day, of course. Mother Nature sure graced us with beautiful weather this past week in South Dakota. In fact, this entire month has been pretty dang beautiful here! It sure beat shipping day two years ago, when we were layered up and freezing. As always, we had good help from friends/family/neighbors and of course, lots of fun.
True to form, I had my trusty iPhone with me; and I ran home and got my big camera after the gather. There were a couple bull calves to castrate that somehow got missed at branding, and replacement heifers to wean. We use weaning rings and turn the calves back out with their mamas for a week or two. The bulls got fancy bands on their boy-parts, a tetanus shot, and rings in their noses and the heifers, well they just got nose rings. I have a nose ring, so I’m partial to this type of jewelry! And of course, the need to have access to the noses of the calves, and the boy parts of the bulls, provided the crew with a chance to practice their head and heel loops! You won’t find any of us complaining about that! Calf prices on the other hand…
Of course there are no photos of me roping on my pretty yellow friend, but that’s okay. We remember how the day went, even without photos!
Happy Trails!
