On the 20th of November flat hats and bridle horses descended upon our ranch. Our good friend and former neighbor booked the barn so that he could host a ranch roping, “Roping on the River”.
None of our crew had ever been to a ranch roping, but we practice this style of roping all the time, and we even host an annual “Big Loop” style branding.
Me, I grew up roping breakaway calves, so I had a hard time learning these loops, and learning how to swing differently so this was a lot of work. I’m still not super handy at it, but I’m getting better! That said, I was fortunate enough to win the Novice Class, on a team with my Cowboy, and our neighbor Jesse (also my bad ass farrier and known to many as the cowboy that makes my calendar on a yearly basis!) And in the Draw roping, I know I heard a +2 on the overhand loop I threw, because I threw it over another critter to catch the one I was after!
I have plenty to say and teach you all about this style of roping, but for now, the images of the day will have to suffice!
Happy Trails!
