I want to take this opportunity to share some quick tips from my dear friend and proven trainer and competitor, Lynn Kohr. I’ve ridden with Lynn since I was little, and she never ceases to amaze me with her talented horsemanship and hunger for learning and improving.
This particular tip is one that hits home with me, as one of my most favorite feelings is when I can place my horses feet exactly where I want them with the slightest touch.
“Feet??? What about soft hands, choosing the perfect bit, and keeping their
mouths light. YEP! All of that plus riding your horse’s feet, keeps us, the
jockey, in the moment, responding (instead of reacting) to each
stride of our partner, our horse. Knowing and being thoughtful of our
horse’s next footfall IS the act of riding aware. Riding closely so that
only small adjustments are needed for smooth rides; be it over jumps, around
barrels or through a reining pattern. Ride as a team, right with each step,
each foot. Ride Aware.”
