Make plans now to attend the 30th Annual Reyes/Russell Angus Bull Sale being held February 22, 2021 at their ranch near Wheatland, WY.
After attending last year’s sale, I wrote up this little piece because I found the sale to be impressive in many ways, from the bulls themselves, the people who raise them, and the community of cattlemen and women who were in attendance.
The 29th Annual Reyes/Russell Angus Bull Sale at the Reyes Ranch in Wheatland, WY took off like a rocket! The first bull into the ring, Lot 1, MR Tiger 24148, kept ring men catching bids and yelling “YEP!” all the way to the $16,500 bid that brought the auctioneer’s gavel down, making him high selling bull of the sale!
This was Juan Reyes and Keith Russell’s 29th Annual Sale, with their decades-long stellar reputation and quality product drawing a good crowd despite inclement Wyoming weather, and even some road-closings. Wanting to continue the success they’ve come to expect from the trustworthy quality of Reyes/Russell bulls, many other buyers capitalized on the online bidding option.
Arriving early to peruse the classy bulls in the pens, neighbors, friends, and fellow cattlemen enjoyed the camaraderie the sale has become known for. Pros and cons of their favorite bulls were recorded in their catalogs, each hoping ‘that certain one’ wouldn’t sell beyond their budget. The banter about weather, road conditions, and the cattle market continued as they enjoyed hot coffee and the delicious pre-sale meal served inside the barn.
Taking the mic just prior to the sale’s kickoff, Juan Reyes personally thanked everyone in the crowd for braving the weather and slick roads to attend. He expressed how amazing it is to still be holding the sale after 29 years, and his appreciation at seeing so many familiar faces each year. He then joked with auctioneer, Lex Madden, about being friends since college, recalling some of their fun memories from back in the day. Juan also emphasized how grateful he is to the team behind the scenes as it takes the team of his wife Joni, his son Jason, his daughter Jennifer along with her husband, and the Keith Russell family to make this sale possible.
Born in Cuba, Juan Reyes was sent to America as a child when Castro came into power, living here without his parents for the first couple years. Persevering with a strong, positive mentality born through such trials, Juan started working on ranches. He was soon running ranches, and then investing in ranches himself – becoming a living American success story.
Reyes enjoys all-around success — National Cattle Dog Training Champion, producer of high altitude bulls and successful rancher. No wonder the Governor of Wyoming has appointed Juan to agricultural commissions, where the state is privileged to benefit from his wisdom and guidance.
The successful 2020 sale offered 214 coming 2-year-old and 9 yearling Angus bulls. Each lot was raised and developed in a realistic range environment, and PAP tested at 8,000 feet. This testing data is very important to cattlemen whose cattle must pasture at high elevations.
Every bull was scored. Reyes/Russells’ sale catalog score sheets were more detailed than I have seen. Buyers and breeders looking for a bull with sustainability appreciate every score; and they were there — right down to each bull’s feet. Ranchers who’ve had to rope and load a bull with bad feet appreciate such comprehensive data and information to consider.
