Kohr Quarter Horses, Roper Apparel and Footwear Barrel Futurity

On May 22-25, 2015 in Gillette, WY the Kohr Family, aka, Kohr Quarter Horses joined with their loyal sponsors. Roper Apparel and Footwear, Zoetis, Classic Equine, Formula 707, Thars’ Feeds, Westergren Quarter Horses, Adequan, Jessie Jaymes Silversmiths, Barrel Racing Report, Purina, Dry Creek Western Wear, Future Fortunes, Triple Crown 100, Northern Hills Homes and RV, SIlever Nails Construction, Dakota Hills Vet Clinic, Li Productions, Ireland Performance Horses, Sitnal Livestock, First National Bank, Flannery Barrel Horses, Adon Ranch, Nannaman Brothers, Wardell Quarter Horses and many more teamed up to make the weekend’s total of $74, 910 in prize money and awards.

Friday night started out with the Thars’ 2D Pole Futurity, $500 added, with the top honors going to Playguns Fame, by Playgun out of Zigzagenzani,  ridden by Jessie Telford and owned by Jake and Jessie Telford turning in the fast time of 20.959. Winning a Jessie Jaymes Silversmith custom buckle. The 2D winner was Lana Dacar on BI Runnin Roxie by Red White and Run and out of BI Lil French Kiss by Frenchmans Guy turning in the time of 23.747 and taking home a buckle donated by Thars’ Feeds and Flannery Performance Horses. Thars’ Open 3D Poles, $500 added, followed the pole futurity. Running a 20.826 and turning in the fast time was Lynn Kohr riding Bueno Sugar Frost owned by Fred and Clara Wilson, collecting a Thars’ Headstall. Winning the 2D poles and running a 21.900 was Jessie Ann Chrisman on GSP Docs Misty Friday taking home a Thars’ Headstall. And winning the 3D poles was Jordan Morman in Friendly running a 22.938 and taking home a Thars’ Headstall. Complete results following.

The Roper Apparel and Footwear/ Zoetis Barrel Futurity started Saturday off with outstanding barrel horses from the surrounding states including entries from AZ, ID, MT, SD, ND, CO, NE, OK and TX.

Out of the field of 62 Futurity barrel horse, Vanilas Sudden Fame, 2010 palomino mare by Dash to Fame and out of SX Frenchmans Vanila, owned by Butch and Stephanie Webb of Webb Ranches, LLC, was crowned Champion.  The mare was piloted this weekend by Samantha Flannery of Mission SD.  Sam picked her up May 6th from Butch Webb.  Sam said, “It started raining the day I brought her home and basically hasn’t quit.  I got to know her in the pasture and I went to one jackpot the weekend before this futurity.  I called Ashley a couple times and got instructions on how she rode her, plus watched some videos.  My first run was an adrenaline rush, she blew out of the first so hard, I was thankful to hit the cantle of the saddle and stayed in.  I felt that I was thrown around some, but we got the job done.  On the second run, I felt like I rode her a lot better, lots of barrels were going down, she let me guide her and keep her off the barrels. I was just the jockey this past weekend and for the rest of the summer.  I’m following in some very big footsteps behind Ashley Schafer.  Her awesome training, made my weekend easy.” Samantha graciously gives the credit to her first jockey and barrel trainer Ashely Schafer of Yoder, WY, who has jockeyed the brilliant mare to lte of $87,000.   Samantha Flannery did her amazing “Jump Jockeying”, riding the mare to the 2015 Championship and adding $ 3500 to Vanilas Sudden Fame’s lte totaling over $90,000! Futurity Top 10

The Animal Medical Center 2D Incentive champion was Dee Haugen on Majestic Corona, by Dash Ta Fame and out of Let Me Loose Corona by Corona Cartel took home a beautiful buckle sponsored by Flannery Barrel Horses and Thars’ Feed. Complete results to follow.

The Westergren Quarter Horses Amateur Futurity Rider Champion was  Bernice Richard on Sincerely Famous, by Famous JR and out of Ima Sincere Bear Too, by Better Judgement. Bernice took home a beautiful Jessie Jaymes Silversmith custom trophy buckle donated by Gary Westergren, Ireland Performance Horses,  Li Productions and Dakota Hills Vet Clinic.    Complete results to follow.

The Dacar Family All-Around Futurity Horse Award, the futurity horse with the most points from the pole futurity and the barrel futurity, and winning a beautiful custom Copper Frame, went to Jessie Telford riding Playguns Fame.

Formula 707 Maturity, $2000 added, was a tight race with Kristen LaDuke of Gillette WY riding her gelding, Steakin Jet Remedy, topping the field of 37 horses.  Curt Laduke, Horse Trainer and husband to Kristen (King) LaDuke bought “Blue Duck” from Rayne Rice after a near career ending accident…Curt was starting Blue Duck for friend, Rayna, of Sydney MT, as a 2 year old. Blue Duck had a freak accident that caused him to be in a cast and loose part of the injured foot.  Curt, thinking he had crippled the horse, asked Rayna if he could purchase him.  As luck had it, (and with diligent care) Blue Duck had a full recovery, leaving only a small scar for evidence of the story.  Kristen did all the barrel training on Blue Duck, taking her time to ensure a solid and quiet, fast footed style. When asked, Kristen humbly explains, “He is not just a barrel horse, but a horse Curt can take to the branding, the roping pen, the sorting pen or the round pen and halter break colts. I only stared him on the barrels as a 5 year old. Although we had somewhat of a rocky start, I finally feel I am starting to see some consistency, but no two runs have ever been the same.  This spring he really has stepped up and started to figure some things out.  Every weekend is a new challenge, but I am very excited to see what the future holds. Streakin Jet Remedy, aka, Blue Duck, is a 7 year old gelding by A Streak of Fling and out of Imashooin, by If Im Elected. For the Maturity Championship, Kristen collected a custom Jessie Jaymes Silversmith trophy buckle, sponsored by Triangle Cross Quarter Horses and in loving memory of “The Chocolate Dash”, a leather Roper Award coat, a Formula 707 bucket and certificate. The Adon Ranch 2D Maturity Incentive Champion was Sara Cheeney on Sprattsfamousbet, by Peerless Fame out of Bet On Leah by Bet The Cash. She won a buckle sponsored by Flannery Barrel Horses and Thars’ Feeds. Complete results follow.
