Collection Part 2/3

We’re covering more ground in our series on collection today! A couple things to note — in the video below: Cosmo wasn’t perfect with her lateral flexions. We are still working on those, and eventually they’ll become just right. But I won’t pick at her, because that will ruin all the try this mare has.

The horse needs to get really soft laterally, so that every time we pick up on the horse, they ask, “how soft do you need me? What are we going to do?” And if we jerk on them, or come from out of nowhere with that ask, they’ll get a brace in their body that’s extremely hard to undo. Ask me how I know!

I try to never pick up the reins on my horses unless I want to ask for something. I think that’s a good rule of thumb. As for the soft feel and collection — this is the beginning of putting it altogether!
