A Quick Release

I have very few pet peeves in my life, but seeing halters still tied, and dangling from a fence post or trailer just wears me out. This is a little trick I learned when I got to the ranch in 2008 and now I’m sharing it with you. This quick release halter tie, isn’t the kind of tie you use to tie your horse up — it’s the tie you use to secure your halter to the fence, in a safe, efficient manner. Around here, we don’t have a good place to hang our halters other than the fence so this tie works just beautifully.

I made you a little video that will hopefully help you figure out how this works. But here are the step-by step instructions first! Note, this works with any type of halter.

1. Take the nose of the halter and 1/3 of the lead rope and put them together.
2. Turn the halter backwards – so the nose and the lead rope are next to the fence/post/tie ring and the behind the ear portion is towards you.
3. Take the tail of your lead rope, and go under and then around the top of the halter and rail/post/tie ring.
4. Reach through the loop you’ve made with the tail of the lead rope, grab the tail and pull up.
