69th Annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale and Drawing

Posted in: Featured, Photography, Rodeo

With a nod of the head, a bucking horse slings himself out of the chute as spurs reach for his shoulders. He takes one big jump to the left, ducks his head and bucks back to the right. The cowboy slumps into the dirt at his feet to the left, before jumping up and retrieving his hat. The pickup men lope up, grab the hack rein and release the flank strap before sending him into the alley, where the saddle will be removed and the bronc can return to his pen to quietly sit and munch hay. His work for the day is complete.

This will be a common occurrence at the 69th Annual World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, May 16 through 19 in Montana.

The Mother’s Day Horse Races are this Sunday at 1 p.m., then the rest of the events begin later in the week, starting with the March Bronc Ride Calcutta at the Bison Bar Wednesday night, May 15. Aaron Watson and Faren Rachels will be in concert Thursday night, then Friday begins the first full day of activities and events.

The Trade Show opens at 3 p.m. Friday at the Fairgrounds, and the Rodeo Grand Entry is at 5:30 p.m., followed closely behind by the wild horse race, bucking bull sale, mutton busting, wild horse race, ranch bronc ride, then street dance at 8:30 p.m. Phew! It’s going to be a jam-packed Friday night!
