This past weekend I competed at an event unlike any other I had ever competed in: The 1st Annual Routier Ranch Super Horse Challenge held at Riley and Jessica Routier’s in Buffalo, SD. This event was a new concept that the Routier’s decided to host in order to highlight performance horses that are competitive in 5 different events. Contestants that were entered in this challenge competed in barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping, heading and heeling with the hopes of their horse being named the Champion Super Horse. Seems easy, however the catch was the same person had to ride that same horse in all 5 events!
I must say it was one of the most highly amusing events I have ever witnessed watching some of the guys run barrels and tie goats! It was a very unique event, unlike any other that we have in our area. There were 29 horses entered which consisted of two rounds in each event. There were many top notch prizes up for grabs including a fully tooled Jerry Beagley saddle sponsored by Gary Westergren of Westergren Quarter Horses, and beautiful Rowdy Silver belt buckles were awarded to the average winners in each event. There was also added money to the purse, which paid over $1,000 to the overall average winner. Chad Miller & MPS Frenchmans Jeans walked away with the title of Champion Super Horse! Plan to attend next years Super Horse Challenge, as this is an event you do not want to miss! More info can be found at www.routierranch.com. Photos are courtesty of Audrey Rahn.

About Bailee Murnion
I was raised on the back of a horse on my families ranch in rural northwestern South Dakota. I grew up roping, tying goats and traning barrel horses, which I still enjoy doing today. I have a deep appreciation for a good horse, a cup...
